Introduction

Ginkgo biloba L. is a famous living fossil tree species native to China. Phylogenetic analysis showed that the stem group age of Ginkgoaceae is approximately 325 million years. Although ginkgo plants were widely distributed around the world, the great upheavals of the earth and the following ice age during the Tertiary and the Quaternary destroyed Ginkgoales plants in most of the world, with only one species surviving in China. Since its ornamental, edible and medicinal value, and high tolerance to biological and abiotic stresses, ginkgo is widely cultivated around the world now.
Supported by the Chinese University iPlant Association (CUiPA), the nationwide monitoring of campus ginkgo trees began in 2019. This program aims to promote interaction among the members of CUiPA, encourage college students to pay attention to the phenological changes, participate in nature observation, and carry forward the spirit of citizen science. Through the monitoring of ginkgo trees on campuses across China, we try to reveal the response mechanism and spatial pattern of Ginkgo biloba to the natural environment.
By 2022, more than 30 universities across China have participated in the activity, and more than 2,000 campus ginkgo trees have been included in the monitoring network.
